Operation at MCAAS really 'big business' (1960)

Originally published in The Cactus Comet, April 15, 1960

What activity of business in Yuma consumes the most fuel, maintains the largest repair and construction bill and produces over 50 feature length films a year?

The Marine Corps Auxilliary Air Station!

In the past year, since units began to deploy here April 12, 1959, MCAAS has consumed some 23,000,000 gallons of aviation fuel, spent an approximate $4,470,000 in repairs and new construction and has produced 417,044 feet of 16mm film.

Not only that but MCAAS is probably the largest business in Yuma with a payroll of over $7 million for the past year.

All this has been accomplished in support of the air station's mission, supporting depolyed Marine and navy squadrons during bombing and gunnery training here.

In the past year there have been some 80 unit deployments.  Squadrons flying everything from the prop-driven AD to the A3D have made use of the fine training facilities here.

In a word, MCAAS is the largest and most complex hotel in the city.
