Detectives with the Yuma Police Department are investigating the suspicious death of a woman whose body was found Tuesday evening inside a vehicle parked at an area grocery store.
According to YPD, at about 6:20 p.m., officers were dispatched to the parking lot of Food City, 1240 W. 8th St., to check on an unresponsive person inside a vehicle.
“When we arrived, we went to check on the person and that is when (the officers) discovered it was a person that was deceased inside the vehicle,” said YPD Lt. Karla Simmons. “It is not known how long she was there at the location.”
Police did not release the woman's identity before press time Tuesday. “At this point, next of kin have not been completely notified, so we are not releasing identification,” Simmons said.
Detectives are in the process of determining the cause of death but have deemed the incident suspicious.
“We may not have those answers until after autopsy,” Simmons noted.
If the death is determined to be a homicide, that will be the sixth inside Yuma city limits so far in 2013. There were only six homicides within the city of Yuma during the entirety of 2012, according to YPD records.
No other information was available as of press time Tuesday.
