Cibola cross country runner Bernie Montoya won the Gatorade State Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year Thursday.

Montoya became the second boys runner to win three state titles this fall, finishing with his fastest state time of 15:14 at Cave Creek Golf Course in November.

“Three as a collection (is satisfying), I can finally say it,” Montoya said at the time. “I was always very conservative about saying anything about it but now that I have it, it's a blessing.”

Montoya begins the track season next month, looking to add to the five titles he has already won in his career.

“Bernie carried a lot of expectations during his senior year and he didn't disappoint,” Cibola coach Kris Norton said. “Most importantly, he stayed healthy and captured his third state title, which was one of his main goals.”

Yuma High ties Kofa

Yuma High came within two minutes off an upset of Kofa, but the Kings scored a goal late in the second overtime.

Jairo Diaz scored both Criminal goals as Yuma High led 1-0 and 2-1. Diaz's second goal had come earlier in the second overtime.

“It was just a well fought match,” Crim coach Evan Chamberlain said. “We rather would have gotten the win, but Kofa played their hearts out.”

Both Kofa goals came from Kevin Huizar. Coach Jamie Nicewander said the Kings dominated possession, outshooting the Criminals 24-3. He also said Yuma had six yellow cards to Kofa's none.

“They played for the tie from the moment they took the field,” Nicewander said. “They just hunkered in.”

Kofa shuts out Yuma High

Cinthya Samaniego had three goals and three assists as Kofa shut out Yuma High 9-0 on Thursday.

Leticia Casillas had two goals an three assists for the Kings, while Jennifer Flores had a goal and two assists.

YC beats Estrella Foothills

Morgan Frank scored two goals in the Shamrocks 4-1 win over Estrella Foothills.

Yuma Catholic led at halftime 3-0 and after Estrella crawled back in the game with a goal, Elisadel Evans slammed the door on a rebound goal off the left post.

As of Jan. 17 the Shamrocks are No. 11 in the power point rankings and play Mohave at 6 p.m. next Wednesday.

PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL

Gila Ridge cruises past San Luis

Allison Weller had 11 points as Gila Ridge topped San Luis 45-30 on Thursday.

Naomi Henry added 10 for the Hawks.

PREP BOYS BASKETBALL

Yuma High defeats Parker

Yuma High overcame a slow start and beat Parker with a fourth quarter 18-6 comeback to win 56-55 Thursday night.

George Magallanes scored five straight points late in the game to tie the game at 52 a piece. Brian Dixon led the team with 21 points and Octavio Rios had 10 points.

The Criminals host Marcos de Niza at 5:30 p.m. today.

Gila Ridge loses to Lake Havasu

Lake Havasu shot 75 percent from the field in their 59-49 win over Gila Ridge Thursday night.

Kevin McCullough and Marcus weeks led the Hawks with 12 points each.

“Basically we played a really good game out there,” said Gila Ridge coach Joe Daily. “Obviously they just shot lights out all night.”

According to Daily the Knights only missed six shots the entire game.

The Hawks host Kofa at 7 p.m. today.
