Comings and Goings

For those readers who have been wondering about the “for sale” sign on the Department of Economic Security building on 4th Avenue —

that's because the agency is having a new building constructed off Redondo Center Drive. So that solves the other mystery about what is being built between Home Depot and the Social Security office.

Once completed, the 4th Avenue office and some other DES offices in the Yuma area will be consolidated there.

Work began about two months ago on the 40,000-square-foot building and is scheduled for delivery to DES by Aug. 15, said Mike Reidy, owner of BTS Construction, a Mesa company that is the principal subcontractor. DeNise Builders of Yuma is the general contractor.

Plans are moving forward for Million Air's presence at Yuma International Airport. The fuel provider, which recently signed a contract with the Yuma County Airport Authority, will be setting up a temporary office in an existing hanger at the airport by July 15, reported Craig Williams, airport manager.

n Meanwhile, plans have been submitted to the city for site work and installation of a modular building for its more permanent location next to the NASA hanger on the west side of the airport. That project is expected to take about three weeks. Pilkington is the general contractor.

Plans have also been submitted for a new office for the Assistance League of Yuma, reported Alan Kircher, city of Yuma deputy building official. The project includes demolishment of the existing office at 1052 S. 5th Ave. and construction of a new 3,000-square-foot office building. The project won't impact the agency's thrift store.

As for residential building activity, Kircher reported that a total of 21 permits were issued by the city in May for new single family homes. That compares to 15 in May of 2009.

Year to date, 104 permits for homes have been issued this year. Last year this time, there were 103. n
