Howard Johnson hotel reopens under new management

The Howard Johnson hotel at 3181 S. 4th Ave. is open again under new management after a brief closure earlier this month.

The hotel has been turned back to the bank, which brought in Rim Hospitality to manage the property, said new manager Tim Cahill.

He explained that Rim Hospitality, which at last count managed 95 hotels, was brought in to clean up the Yuma hotel, get it reopened and operate it for the investors. Cahill said he's also been reestablishing relationships and taking bookings for the hotel and the meeting room. Most of the former staff was rehired.

The hotel can still be reached at 344-1420.

A building permit has been issued for the new complex for the Humane Society of Yuma, reported Alan Kircher, city of Yuma deputy building official.

The complex will be located at the southwest corner of 40th Street and Avenue 4-1/2E on land donated by the family of Glen Curtis and Sam Perricone. Eckard Commercial Construction is the general contractor for the project that will include an office building (with space for the spay-neuter clinic), three kennels and a dog activity park.

Shawn Smith, HSOY executive director, said work has already begun and he hopes the project will be completed by September 2012. A loan was obtained through 1st Bank Yuma, but HSOY is still looking for donations to help fund the project, he added.
