LOCAL GLANCE Dec. 15: JUCO football, prep basketball

Four Arizona Western football players signed letters of intent to continue their careers at NCAA Division I colleges, the school announced Thursday.

The players were tight end Emmanuel Bibbs, linebacker/defensive end Sam Wren, defensive back Cassius Sendish and backup tight end Greg Reese.

Bibbs signed with Iowa State after two years with the Matadors. He was a starter this past year, scoring six touchdowns, including one in the El Toro Bowl, a 42-37 win over Nassau.

After recording 15 sacks, including one in the bowl game, Wren moves on to Oklahoma State. He had a safety and a touchdown this year as well.

Sendish heads to a Kansas squad losing three members of its secondary.

Reese, after playing primarily as a backup in 2011, as well as on special teams and limited 2012 action, will head to Utah.

Shamrocks win suspended game

Waiting a week to finish their game against the San Pasqual girls basketball team may have helped Yuma Catholic.

Picking up from a game that was suspended on Dec. 13, the Shamrocks looked much sharper and won 52-32 on Thursday night at Winterhaven.

The game was suspended because of a leaky roof with 7:31 left in the third quarter and the Shamrocks (3-2) leading 25-18.

“It was different, there's no question,” Yuma Catholic coach Bob McGalliard said. “But we try to control the controllable.”

Junior point guard Madison Brazeel had a game-high 19 points for the Shamrocks and senior wing Makena Zamora added 11. The Warriors (4-3) got 14 points from junior forward Ceara Ingraham and Marissa Miller chipped in eight.

“There are times we come out flat like we did today and when we only play a half, it's tough to make that up,” San Pasqual coach Patricia Malvido said. “We didn't have the same momentum as we did as we started out the first half.”

Yuma Catholic routs Antelope

Sophomore post Matt Pistone scored 21 points and the Yuma Catholic boys basketball team won 72-48 at Antelope on Thursday night.

Sophomore point guard Carter Rodriguez added 18 for the Shamrocks, who are No. 3 in Arizona Interscholastic Association Division IV Power Points.

“We got to play all our guys and it's good to go into the break 13-1,” Yuma Catholic coach Brooks Neumann said of the Shamrocks, who are 5-0 in power points games. “I wish we didn't have a break because we're playing well. We've won seven in a row.”

For Antelope, Austin Mercer had a team-high 10 points.

“We had some good times and some bad times,” Antelope coach Lance Wagner said. “(Yuma Catholic) is a great team.”
