The volunteers who serve at Yuma Regional Medical Center look out for more than the patients and employees. They're helping out possible future hospital workers.
The YRMC's Volunteer Services Department has raised $11,000 through its fundraising efforts, enough to offer six scholarships to Yuma County residents who want careers in the health-care industry or need help in reaching their health-related career goals.
The Volunteer Services Department is looking for applicants for the following scholarships:
• Professor Howard W. Griffiths Memorial Scholarship of $1,000, given in memory of Professor H. Griffiths by Marilyn Griffiths, a devoted volunteer at YRMC.
• Volunteer Memorial Scholarship of $2,000, given in memory of those volunteers who have nurtured the scholarship program.
• Four $2,000 scholarships for those pursuing careers in the medical field.
Applicants must be a county resident enrolled and/or accepted at Arizona Western College or Northern Arizona University-Yuma, have a 3.0 grade-point average or higher and majoring in a health-related profession.
The application deadline is 4 p.m. April 19. Applications are available at the Volunteer Services Department at YRMC, 2400 S. Avenue A; high school counseling offices; AWC financial aid office; and www.yumaregional.org.
The application must include transcripts, proof of eligibility, acceptance or enrollment in a qualifying course of health-related study, two letters of reference and a brief personal essay.
