A senior at Gila Ridge High School was recently selected to receive the George Montopoli Presidential Teacher of the Year Scholarship.
Montopoli, professor of mathematics at Arizona Western College, chose Maria Martinez for the full-tuition scholarship for up to four semesters.
The award covers in-state tuition and other fees assuming a 15-credit course load. Funding is through the president's budget.
Martinez, who is taking classes at AWC along with her high school courses, plans to begin full-time at AWC in the fall. To keep the scholarship, she must maintain a 3.0 grade-point average.
“Maria is interested in going into law enforcement; she is actively involved in karate and track, and is an artist,” stated AWC.
Martinez will be recognized for receiving the scholarship at the Teacher of the Year banquet at the Yuma Civic Center on April 23.
