I am a winter visitor from Canada and I am certainly not about to tell you how to run your country. But having some experience with gun control laws, I would like to offer a few observations on the subject.
We had a liberal government in Canada that passed gun control legislation. Over a period of a few years, they spent billions of tax dollars on gun registration, etc., and all they accomplished was to make instant criminals out of about 3 million law-abiding gun owners who didn’t register their guns. They put a single shot .22 varmint gun in the same category as an assault rifle. Many collectors’ firearms became illegal and were to be destroyed. If they had gotten their way, some future governments would have found it very easy to confiscate all firearms.
At the time, politicians said that would never happen. Says who? It happened in Russia before World War I and in Germany before World War II. Luckily, our present conservative government repealed the legislation.
The problem as I see it is that the morals of a good portion of the population in North America has fallen to an all-time low.
No one likes to see people gunned down, especially children, but we indiscriminately kill hundreds of thousands of unborn babies every year and turn the whole country upside down when a few people get shot. I don’t think a lot of gun owners would argue with restricting assault weapons but that would probably prove to be the proverbial foot in the door.
The founding fathers of our country were very wise when they drafted the constitution. The American Constitution is far stronger than any other country’s in protecting individual rights.
Don’t give up your rights.
