I think Joe Orduño would be proud if he could see the park in San Luis, Ariz., named for him.
Orduño was a San Luis police officer killed in a 1986 traffic accident while answering a report of a child kidnapping. The report turned out to be a false alarm, but the fact remained Orduño gave his life helping a youngster he believed endangered.
Today, its athletic fields and courts, gymnasium and ramadas make Joe Orduño Park the site of city youth and adult recreation programs, and a gathering place for picnics and celebrations of birthday parties and other family milestones.
Recently, the park was named the Best Public Recreational Area in the Best of South Yuma County, a poll by Bajo El Sol and the Yuma Sun of readers' favorite businesses and venues in the south county.
It was fitting the city attached Orduño's name to a park that plays such a prominent role in lives of youths and their families.
