An Arizona Department of Public Safety officer was killed Monday evening in a crash on Interstate 8 near Dateland.
“The officer was investigating a rollover crash when he was struck by a semi-truck. The officer was inside his patrol car when he was struck,” Officer Carrick R. Cook, public information officer, said.
The crash occurred near the community of Dateland, about 65 miles east of Yuma. The right lane was closed at the time, Cook said.
Authorities had not released the officer's identity by press time.
“The officer served with DPS for 15 years and was assigned to the Dateland area,” Cook said.
The rollover accident involved a single vehicle and resulted in injuries to a female, he said. No other details on the rollover were available by press time.
According to Yuma Sun archives, several local officers have lost their lives on the roadways. In 1986, San Luis Police Officer Jose “Joe” Orduno, 22, was killed when his patrol car was struck head-on by another vehicle on U.S. Highway 95 while answering a report of a child kidnapping that turned out to be false.
California Highway Patrol (CHP) Officer James D. Schultz, who was assigned to Winterhaven, died in 1996 after being struck by a vehicle driven by a motorist who had apparently dozed off at the wheel. Schultz, 46, was checking an abandoned vehicle on Interstate 8 between Gordon's Well and the Brock Research Center.
Yuma County Sheriff's Senior Deputy Michael B. Meyer died in an accident at milepost 54 on U.S. Highway 95, north of Yuma, in 2001. A heavy storm was blowing through the area, and 41-year-old Meyer was checking the washes and the roads for flooding and damage.
CHP Officer Robert Dickey, a Yuma resident, died in 2007 on Interstate 8 near California mile marker 84.4 in a single-vehicle accident. The five-mile section of Interstate 8 between Sidewinder Road and Ogilby Road has been named the California Highway Patrol Officer Robert F. Dickey Memorial Highway.
