To further provide scholarships for students and in observance of the college's 50th anniversary, the Arizona Western College Foundation recently formed an AWC Alumni Association.
David Godley, professor emeritus at AWC, was named president of the association.
“The forming of an alumni association after 50 years is well overdue and well needed, and I couldn't be any more surprised or more proud to serve as first president of the association,” said Godley. “To me it's quite an honor. I've spent nearly 43 years at Arizona Western College or NAU as a student and faculty member.”
While the association is in the process of adopting by-laws and recruiting members, it will award 10 scholarships this year for the following fall semester, thanks to the support of the AWC Foundation.
Godley said his hope is that former students will give back to the current generation of students in the form of any inspiration and assistance they can provide. Another goal of the association is to keep former students aware of current AWC happenings.
He would like to see the association establish a Hall of Fame recognizing the accomplishments of former AWC students who are scholars or professional athletes making a difference and who are helping students reach their dreams as they were also helped while attending AWC, according to AWC.
Godley currently teaches at AWC and NAU as an adjunct faculty member. In addition to many committees at AWC over the years, he has served on the State-Wide Articulation Task Force, the Sam Walton Fellow faculty adviser for Students In Free Enterprise, the academic adviser for the Business and Liberal Arts Division and the first Senate Faculty president.
He will now serve on the AWC Foundation Board of Directors as the first AWC Alumni Association president.
“I have worked closely with David at AWC since 1999. I know he will do an incredible job as the AWC Alumni president. He has a great love for AWC,” stated Christina Hawkey, executive director of the AWC Foundation.
