Melissa Miranda, seventh-grade special education teacher at Somerton Middle School, is the fifth and final recipient of the Teacher Appreciation Award from the KIDS CuddleKit Closet project and the Yuma Sun.
According to Jessica Casey’s nomination, “I have had the pleasure of working with Ms. Miranda as a teacher and Instructional Coach. Kindness is not only a focus in her classroom, but it resonates from her. Not only does she make it a priority to show kindness to her own students, but to everyone on our campus.
“Often times, when a student is having trouble, they will ask to speak with Ms. Miranda because they know that she will support them unconditionally. The relationships that she forges with students do not die out after these issues have been resolved; rather she makes a point of checking on these students repeatedly to make sure that they are doing well.
“I’ve rarely heard Ms. Miranda raise her voice when speaking to students. She is gentle and understanding when teaching, and advocates for her students to do their personal best. Students who often think they are ‘failures’ flourish in her classroom. Even students who are considered to be ‘troublemakers’ work hard and excel with Ms. Miranda’s guidance and support. She creates a calm and nurturing environment that any parent would appreciate.”
In addition to being recognized, Miranda will receive a $50 gift card to the Yuma business of her choice.
