Residents of a Yuma neighborhood lost electricity for about three hours Wednesday after a car smashed into a power pole on 5th Street near Avenue C. There were no injuries reported.
According to the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office, at about 11:15 a.m., a man driving a Silver Honda Civic LX veered off the road and smashed into the pole, causing power lines to fall. The car also damaged a chain-link fence before slamming into a tree in the front yard of the home at 3721 W 5th Street.
The man told deputies his steering column locked up, forcing him off the road.
An initial investigation revealed the man had most likely been following the speed limit, and had not been intoxicated at the time of the crash. He is not expected to receive any traffic citations.
APS linemen responded to the area where they replaced the old damaged wooden pole with a steel pole, and reran the power lines to restore power to the neighborhood.
