An article popped up in my news feed the other day headlined “9 books that people will judge you for reading.”
I find the concept infuriating.
I am a voracious reader. When my sister, then a young teen, was reading Harry Potter, so did I, so we could discuss the books together.
When I have a passing curiosity about U.S. history, I dig into a book about it.
Sad news day at work? On those days, I might enjoy a good book that involves vampires eating bad guys – or something else equally strange – just to have the pure escapism that the story provides.
From my perspective, unless you see someone standing on a street corner with Mein Kampf under their arm, spouting off pro-Hitler statements, we've got no business judging someone else for their reading choices.
In fact, oftentimes, it's a reason to have a good conversation with someone about what they're reading and why. Who knows? The answer may surprise you.
