While digging through some files I found an entertaining fact.
I’ve raced against Jimmie Johnson, the five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion.
OK, not head-to-head, but in the 1995 SCORE International off-road series, my partner Dan Beaver and I competed against the up-and-coming Johnson a number of times in Class 8. Johnson was 19 at the time and destined for greatness.
Anyway, back to my story, at the Baja 500 that year, we started first in class and 30 miles into the race, in a river, we came upon three cars that were crashed into each other, blocking our line through the water.
Dan throws our truck into reverse, backs into some tules and says we’re going to let the next truck pick the line around those cars, and we’ll follow.
The next truck was Johnson, and as Dan said, we took his line around the pileup.
We later caught and passed Johnson, and went on to finish third.
Johnson DNF’d that day, so I guess you could say we also beat Mr. 5-Time. Not a lot of people can say that.
