The Yuma 13-year-old Babe Ruth team won it's final pool play game, beating Ker-West (Calif.) 6-3 on Friday in Vernal, Utah.
The win put the team in the semifinals, in which they will face Tri Valley (Calif.) in a 1 p.m. semifinal today. The winner will face either Hawaii or El Segundo (Calif.) in the championship at 4 p.m. El Segundo beat Yuma 15-5 earlier in pool play.
“We're really excited, really looking forward to playing them again,” Yuma coach Ray Gonzalez said. “The team they saw last time wasn't the Yuma team. But we're back on track and will give them our best. But to do that. First we have to have our full focus on Tri Valley. We can't overlook them.”
Izaak Varela pitched a complete game for the win. Gonzalez said his pitch count was low and may be available in the late game today should Yuma advance. Sam Garcia had two hits, including a home run.
