Memories will flood your mind when classic performers take the stage for two nights of music at the nostalgia-filled Midnight at the Oasis classic car show.
Concerts on Friday and Saturday night will feature returning favorite Rockola, headlining Friday night's concert, and '80s rock band Loverboy, closing Saturday's show.
Opening Friday's concert is the band Big Johnson with the Horndogs at 4:30 p.m., and Saturday's concert will begin at 7 p.m. with '70s rock legends Survivor, remembered for their hit song "Eye of the Tiger," written at the request of Sylvester Stallone for the film "Rocky III."
"We'll have great entertainment that is sure to make people dance and swing," said Mary Cordery of the Caballeros de Yuma, the organizers of the annual event.
Loverboy, which will hit the stage at 8:45 Saturday night, was recently featured on the NBC television show "Hit Me Baby One More Time." They performed their hit "Working for the Weekend."
From 1980 through 1987, Loverboy garnered four multi-platinum albums and numerous international gold albums. Their tours sold out arenas and stadiums nationwide. Their hit singles came one after another, and went on to become the anthems and party songs of an entire generation of rock concert-going fans.
The band's hit singles, particularly "Turn Me Loose" and "Working for the Weekend," have become arena rock staples, and are still heard on classic rock radio stations across the United States.
Loverboy's red leather pants, bandanas, and big rock sound defined the band's trademark image and high-energy live show.
"I can't wait to see them perform 'Working for the Weekend.' I loved seeing the song on Saturday Night Live!" said Yuma resident and fan of the band, Chris Lara.
Indeed, Loverboy's song was featured in an SNL skit in the '90s when it was played in an extremely popular sketch involving Chris Farley and Patrick Swayze auditioning to be Chippendale dancers. Numerous other references to Loverboy have been made in pop culture, from the films "Zoolander" to "Crank."
Rockola, the San Diego-based quartet, will bring to the show their blend of four-part harmonies with a mix of songs, from the British Invasion of the '60s to the California Dreaming days of our sunny neighboring state.
Rockola will take the stage at 7 p.m. Friday.
"We perform cover songs of classic rock hits, and even perform full Beatles albums on occasion," said Bob Tedde in a previous interview.
Rockola is known to have three-piece guitar solos, thunderous drum solos and right-on renditions of Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl," where audience participation is expected.
Local band Big Johnson with the Horndogs will be taking the stage Friday afternoon.
Big Johnson with the Horndogs isn't your average classic rock band. Playing hits from the '70s and '80s with a little sprinkle of the '60s, this seven-piece band has a horn section accompanying the stylings familiar to bands like The Commodores, Chicago, KC and the Sunshine Band and Blood, Sweat and Tears, said keyboard player and vocalist Brian Claar.
"I'm not tooting my own horn but when people come out to see us, they will be very happy and impressed. We are a very energetic band with a ton of on-stage experience," Claar said.
