Car show rolls downtown

Families are invited to an informal social evening from 6 to 9 Friday, when there will be a classic car show, motorcycle displays and bicycles in the parking lot in the 200 block between Madison Avenue and Main Street.

A portion of Main Street in front of Lutes Casino will also be closed to auto traffic.

Mark Munk, a manager with the Yuma Visitors Bureau, said, "The event is to offer the public opportunity to visit the various businesses in the downtown area, as these will be open. There will be free music and entertainment. The merchants in the 224 Main Street walkway will remain open, along with food establishments and others in the Old Town Business Owners group."

The parking lot venue is for the vehicle displays. "No vendor booths will be in the lot," Munk said.

One of the vintage cars that will be on display is a 1920 Model T Depot Hack, owned by Katie and Carlos Figari. "This has the original chassis and was restored by Katie's parents, Barbara and Billy M. Cowin, in California in 1962. Barbara painted the body bright red," said Carlos, of Figari Real Estate on Main Street. "It has a 42-horsepower motor, spoke wheels, and passenger seats that fold down."

Pedaling his bright yellow beach cruiser bicycle, Scott Mustard said, "This bike will be displayed at the social Friday, and we're keeping our Italian Food restaurant open on the corner of Madison and 2nd Street. This bike will be used to deliver food - when it gets a little cooler," Mustard said.

Anyone wishing to join in the car, bicycle or motorcycle displays is asked to contact Munk at 783-0071 for information and space availability.

Parking will be available along Madison Avenue and at the parking lot south of 3rd Street.
