Foundation announces grant recipients
The recipients of grants offered through the Yuma Community Foundation were announced Tuesday night during the foundation's Heart of Yuma awards ceremony.
In all, $84,188 in grants were awarded in the foundation's most recent funding cycle, May through September, to area nonprofit organizations for programs and services to benefit the community.
Of that, $60,000 came from the Sturgis Charitable Trust. Since 2000, the foundation has been awarding money from that trust to area organizations on behalf of the Sturgis family.
Volunteer community distribution panels were established to review the most recent grant applications and make recommendations to the Advisory Board of the Yuma Community Foundation on awards.
The recipients, the amounts they received and the programs to be funded are as follows:
-American Red Cross - $2,000 for Picking Up the Pieces: After a Fire
-Chicanos Por La Causa - $2,431 for No to Violence
-San Luis, Ariz., Parks and Recreation Department - $3,600 for the Sprinkle, Splash-N-Swim
-Yuma Regional Medical Center Foundation - $6,000 for the Yuma Coalition for Awareness-Breast Cancer Screening Program
-Gnats Inc. - $2,500 for Grad Night T-shirts
-Housing American Corp. - $2,800 for the Playtime-Playground project at the Colorado Street Apartments
-Humane Society of Yuma - $1,402 for A Safe Way Home
-MGM Garden Club - $2,280 for the kiosk educational project
-Regional Center for Border Health - $3,486.84 for the fourth annual Camp Not-A-Choo Asthma Camp
-Saguaro Girl Scout Council - $3,500 for Community Girl Scouting for Underserved Girls
-San Luis Corporation for the Arts and Humanities - $3,300 for Teatro San Luis
-The Freedom Library - $2,500 for an Evening with the Rushmore Presidents
-The Salvation Army - $2,000 for Family Night
-The Salvation Army - $8,715 for soup kitchen equipment
-The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club - $6,041.16 for its lunch program
-Yuma Community Theater - $3,300 for the musical "Here's Love: The Miracle on 34th Street"
-Yuma County Historical Society - $1,000 for Memories of the Lower Colorado River display
-Yuma County Library District - $2,250 for the Catch the Summer Reading Bug/Metamorphosis program
-Yuma County Public Health Services District - $4,318 for the Body Walk
-Yuma Elementary School District 1 - $6,000 for special needs fitness programs
-Yuma Fine Arts Association - $4,864 for the Children's Summer Technology Camp at the Yuma Art Center Museum
-Yuma Orchestra Association - $9,900 for the one-week summer string music camp
