Witnesses sought in 32nd Street accident

Yuma police are looking for witnesses to an accident that happened around 11 a.m. Monday at 32nd Street and Cielo Verde Drive.

According to Yuma police, an investigation revealed that Vernon Jackson, 80, of Washington, was driving eastbound on 32nd Street in a blue 2006 Honda CR-V when he attempted to make a U-turn at the intersection of Cielo Verde Drive and collided with a white 2002 Mercury Sable.

A Mercury Sable driven by Ludean Robertson, 72, of Yuma, was also supposed to be traveling eastbound on 32nd Street approaching the intersection at Cielo Verde Drive.

A passenger in the Mercury Sable, however, told officers that the Honda CR-V had turned left off of Cielo Verde Drive onto 32nd Street to go west.

“There is a discrepancy, so that is why we are asking for witnesses,” Cpl. Leanne Worthen said. “There had to be drivers in other lanes at the time.”

Jackson was transported to the hospital with back and neck pain. An adult male passenger from the Mercury Sable went to the hospital for cuts to his hand and forearm.

The Yuma Police Department encourages any witnesses to the collision to call accident investigator Randy Thompson at 373-4700, or 78-CRIME to remain anonymous.
