Man killed in weekend accident

A Canadian man is dead after suffering a serious head injury in a weekend automobile accident in Winterhaven.

The California Highway Patrol said Monday they could not release the identity of the 73-year-old man from Vancouver, British Columbia, because the next of kin had not yet been notified.

Drugs or alcohol were not believed to be factors in the Saturday afternoon accident, CHP said.

"There was a traffic collision involving two vehicles," said CHP Sgt. Pearce.

The first vehicle was a 1987 Chevrolet van being driven by a 55-year-old woman, Odile Frunon Qualls of Bullhead City, Ariz., Pearce said. The second vehicle was a 2008 Honda Ruckus scooter-type motorcycle driven by the Canadian man.

"Both of the vehicles were traveling westbound on Winterhaven Drive," Pearce said. "As the van was in the process of passing the Ruckus in the intersection of Winterhaven Drive and Araz Road, they collided, and the man was ejected onto the roadway.

"The man was wearing a helmet, but still suffered head trauma. Neither the driver of the van or her passenger, 18-year-old Kenneth Mark Chase, also of Bullhead City, were injured.

"Qualls pulled over at the scene and dialed 911," Pearce said. "The Winterhaven Fire Department was in the area and rendered first aid on the man, who was then transferred to Yuma Regional Medical Center."

He was then taken by helicopter to a Phoenix hospital, where he died, Pearce said.

Pearce said the accident is under investigation.
