Accident on Ave. A closes street

Two people suffered serious injuries during a single-vehicle accident early Sunday morning.

According to the Yuma Police Department, at about 4:15 a.m., a 27-year-old male and a 23-year-old female occupied a white 2003 GMC Envoy that was traveling northbound on Avenue A when it ran off the east side of the roadway.

It then crossed the parking lot of the Circle K convenience store located at the intersection.

The vehicle then hit a large business sign and two parked cars before coming to rest on the sidewalk in front of Ronnie's Pizza.

It is believed that the occupants of the vehicle did not have their seatbelt on and were ejected during the accident. Speed and alcohol are considered to be significant factors in the wreck, according to police.

The two people were rushed to Yuma Regional Medical Center and were later flown to hospitals in Phoenix, according to YPD.

The name of the occupants are being withheld pending notification of family members.

Debris from the signpost was scattered throughout the parking lot, with at least one piece landing on the opposite side of Avenue A.

The Yuma Police Department is actively investigating this matter and encourages anybody with any information about this case to please call the YPD at 373-4700 or 78-Crime to remain anonymous.
