Shots reported from across border

Three construction workers reported being fired at across the border from Mexico while building vehicle barriers along the Colorado River on Tuesday.

According to Agent Michael Lowrie, spokesman for the Yuma Sector, the incident happened at about 3 p.m. in the vicinity of County 11th Street and the Colorado River.

Lowrie said the workers for BMP Construction company, which has been hired to erect the barriers, reported hearing at least two gunshots fired in their direction.

"They said they heard the shots and saw one impact in the brush near them," Lowrie said.

The construction workers, according to Lowrie, fled the area after the shooting and reported the incident to the Border Patrol.

Lowrie said Border Patrol agents secured the area, but no one was found. A Customs and Border Protection helicopter was also deployed.

No was injured in the incident and no property was damaged. Lowrie said there is no indication that anyone in the United States fired the shots nor whether it was a hostile action.

Mexican authorities were also notified. Since the incident did not involve a federal agent, the investigation has been turned over to the Yuma County Sheriff's Office.

"It is a shooting incident that occurred in (YCSO's) jurisdiction," Lowrie said.
