Roadwork Ahead: where and when

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

Stay away from 1st Street and Madison Avenue starting next week.

A sewer line project will require closure of the intersection for about two weeks. The project, which includes installation of new manholes, is set to begin Monday.

During the work, 1st Street traffic will be detoured at 1st Avenue on the west and Main Street on the east.

The work is one of various street projects in the area that will require traffic detours, according to the city of Yuma. They include:

- Avenue A between 28th and 32nd streets is scheduled to remain closed through July 21 while reconstruction of the intersection of A and Palmcroft Drive proceeds.

Work includes relocating Palmcroft Drive and the Kofa High School entrance on Avenue A, construction of a southbound right-turn lane and installation of a traffic signal.

As part of the project, work will be done on the parking lot of Smucker Park that will take exiting traffic to the Kofa driveway. This will require a partial reconstruction of the park walking path, and walkers may have to take a temporary detour while a new section of walking path is being built, city officials said.

- 32nd Street is restricted to one lane of traffic in each direction between Avenue A and 8th Avenue to allow Arizona Public Service to install a major conduit bank.

At an undetermined date after the Avenue A closure at Palmcroft is lifted, 32nd will close between 8th Avenue and Avenue A for about six weeks when a trench is opened as part of the project, city officials said.

A second phase of this construction will involve the closure of the 32nd Street-8th Avenue intersection, tentatively in August.

- 32nd Street/County 11th Street is scheduled to be closed between Avenue D and Fortuna Avenue for a Yuma County public works project Monday and Tuesday. Work is scheduled to be completed and the street reopened by 4 p.m. each day.

- 23rd Avenue will be closed between 1st Street and Colorado Street until mid-August for a street reconstruction project. Additionally, the parking lot of Joe Henry Park will be repaved, and an irrigation ditch will be relocated here as well. Access to Joe Henry Park will be available from Colorado Street using 22nd Avenue.

- Avenue 7E is currently closed between 30th and 32nd streets for trench work.

- 16th Street will have lane restrictions between one block east of Avenue C and the westernmost driveway of Suverkrup School for a Southwest Gas project that will be completed in yet-undetermined two-day period by July 31.

- 20th Street is scheduled to be closed to traffic from 25th Drive to Athens Avenue until mid-August as the Villa Hermosa subdivision water line and street reconstruction proceeds.

The project is taking place in an the area bounded by Avenue B, 22nd Street, Thacker Canal and 20th Street. The project is expected to be completed in November.

- 1st Street is scheduled to have lane restrictions between 3rd and 4th avenues through July 20. Most work will be done from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

- Slowdowns and turn restrictions are possible on 24th Street between Avenues 6E and 9E during a road-widening and construction project that is expected to be completed Oct. 31.

- Work to widen Araby Road north of 32nd Street has been completed, and workers are now extending Araby south of 32nd Street to County 14th Street. The project, funded by the Arizona Department of Transportation, is being done to incorporate Araby into an area service highway that will link a planned commercial port of entry at San Luis, Ariz., to Interstate 8.

The highway is scheduled for completion in September 2009.
