Saturday concert to fete Arizona Centennial
Arizona's centennial will be celebrated with a special concert Saturday at the Historic Yuma Theatre. Concert selections have been chosen specifically to honor Arizona during the state's centennial celebration.
The Yuma String Consortium will present “Romantic Classics” performed by the Yuma Civic Orchestra, The Twinklers and The Young and String Ambassadors.
The groups accompanying the orchestra are composed of students in elementary and middle school who play stringed instruments and are in the early stages of musical development.
The orchestra, led by conductors Janet Jones and Kathy Younker, will present “The Arizona Centennial Overture,” commissioned by the Arizona Historical Advisory Commission and composed by Sy Brandon, a resident of Cottonwood, Ariz. The concert will include pieces by American composers Aaron Copland and John Philip Sousa.
“The orchestras will take you back in time and refresh your memories of the music Arizonans enjoyed throughout the 20th century,” said Jones, who is also artistic director.
The concert will begin at 7 p.m. The Historic Yuma Theatre is located at 254 Main St.
Tickets are $10 for general admission, $5 for military, senior citizens and students. Children under 12 will be admitted free when accompanied by an adult.
Tickets are available at the Yuma Art Center next to the theater or by calling 373-5202. For more information, call 246-6715 or 314-0735.
