Gadsden Band to perform at Sun Vista RV Resort
In an effort to raise funds for a once-in-a-lifetime performance in London, the Gadsden School District Marching Band will showcase its talent Nov. 1 at Sun Vista RV Resort.
Band members are hoping to raise enough money to fund the trip to England, where they've been invited to represent both Yuma and Arizona in a New Year's Parade.
“We learned of the project from the band and decided we could help these children to go London. Older adults and children have a special connection. If not for our residents, we could not help these children,” said Nancy McMullen, director of recreation for Sun Vista Resort.
The public is invited to attend the event, which will consist of a parade inside the resort at 11 a.m. and a festival in the park, where hot dogs will offered and donations accepted for the band.
In addition, $1 raffle tickets will be sold, with half of the proceeds going to support the band and the other half as a prize for the winner.
Donation boxes will also be available at the event for attendees to show their financial support.
“This event is not only for our residents. We ask the public to come because the more people who are involved the greater, the support we can give to these children. If we all give a little, we can raise a lot to help them,” McMullen said.
The Sun Vista recreation director said stores like Wally's World and Mr. B's Bicycles have joined the cause and called on more businesses to show support for the Gadsden School District musicians.
“We are grateful to Sun Vista. We ask people to attend and support the event, and at the same time enjoy the band's performance,” said Liliana Navarrete, president of the band's parent committee.
She added that support such as that offered by Sun Vista is vital for meeting the children's goal of participating in the famous parade to be held on Jan. 1. The 100 young musicians hoping to go to London, including students in grades fifth to eighth, will perform at the RV park.
Sun Vista RV Resort is located at 7201 E. 32nd St. For more information on the event and donating, call (928) 726-8920.
