Groups vie for more from Oprah's Big Give

Three Yuma noprofits already awarded $2,000 each now compete for $4,000 more

The three Yuma nonprofit organizations named in the Oprah's Big Give charity project are busy with fundraising events in competition for $4,000 to add to the $2,000 each has already received.

Selected as winners of the initial giveaway from the Oprah Winfrey show through ABC Channel 5 are Amberly's Place, Crossroads Mission and MOMS (Moms Offering Moms Support) Club.

Each has been creating action plans to raise the most money within the two-week schedule. The winner will be announced April 16.

For Amberly's Place:

- Stephani Costanza, Miss Yuma County 2008, will host a fashion show from 8 to 10 p.m. Friday at the Historic Yuma Theatre, 254 S. Main St. Tickets are $10 each to see new styles.

- Amberly's volunteers will be at Applebee's, 1100 E. 16th St., from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday to serve a pancake breakfast, $5.

Also Saturday, Costanza will offer a class in her "onegurlrevolution," empowering women with self-defense programs at $10 each, one at noon, a second at 2 p.m., both at World Gym, 2205 W. 23rd St.

Russ McCloud of Accurate Automotive Attention offers a certificate for a free oil change to anyone coming to his business in Yuma or the Foothills and making out a check to Amberly's Place for at least $25.

Students in the massage therapy classes at Arizona Western College are also contributing services to Amberly's, and collection jars are distributed at various business locations.

For Crossroads Mission

- Saturday, from 4 to 8 p.m. at The Village area in front of the Harkins Theatres, entertainers will be "Singing for their Supper" as a fundraiser for the renovations of the kitchen at the Crossroads Mission.

Among those scheduled so far are the Yuma Youth Choir, singer Reuben Dominguez, guitarist-singer Gerry Giss, mariachis, choirs and comedians. A special container will be open for cash donations toward the mission project.

Mike Shelton, Crossroads advisory council member, is recruiting talented people to entertain "from five to 20 minutes," he said. "No heavy metal or anything with profanities," Shelton added. To participate, call him at 726-0796.
