School board vacancy in Wellton district

A board member position in the Wellton Elementary School District has become available.

George Keating is resigning effective Jan. 31. Yuma County School Superintendent Tom Tyree said Keating is moving to Phoenix. A retired Marine Corps colonel, he was appointed to the school board in 2009.

Tyree said applicants for the vacancy should provide a letter of interest to the Yuma County School Superintendent's Office by Feb. 3.

Letters should include the applicant's qualifications for the position, reasons for wanting to serve, address and length of time living in the district, as it is a requirement to live in the district for at least a year before applying for the position.

Those applying also must be registered to vote in the state of Arizona and can't have a spouse who is an employee of the district they are applying for.

Letters can be submitted electronically to ckautzer@apscc.org or by mail to the Yuma County Superintendent's Office at 210 S. 1st Avenue, Yuma, AZ 85364.

Candidates will be interviewed during the week of Feb. 6. Tyree said he hopes to swear in the new board member during the Feb. 13 board meeting.

“We are looking for someone who is willing to put in the time to serve of the board, the time it takes to be an effective board member,” said Tyree. “We're looking for someone that has the ability to work with others especially in a board setting and someone who is committed to providing quality education for the children of these districts.”
