Man wanders away from Foothills home

Yuma County sheriff's deputies and Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents were looking Thursday for an elderly man who wandered away from his Foothills home.

According to Yuma County Sheriff's Office spokesman Lt. Darren Simmons, the 82-year-old man in the early stages of Alzheimer's walked away from his residence in the 22000 block of Butterfield Stage Road at about 10 a.m. He wasn't reported missing, however, until about 1 p.m.

Simmons said Border Patrol agents were following one set of foot tracks found in the area while deputies on the search and rescue team were following another.

Canines from the Arizona Department of Corrections were called in to assist. A helicopter from U.S. Customs and Border Protection was involved earlier in the day but was eventually called away.
