Jelly Bellys sold for fundraiser
Ron Watson Middle School is selling Jelly Belly candy through Friday to support both their school and troops overseas.
The school, located at 9851 E. 28th St., is looking for local businesses and individuals to purchase jelly beans to be sent to military. Proceeds will go to purchase new sports uniforms for students.
“Our boys and girls teams share uniforms and they're old and there's not funding for that,” said Dominga Tafoya, PTO president. “We're trying to raise money for that and we also figured partnering with having it donated to the troops would be awesome.”
Donations can be given for $25 for a quarter box, $50 for a half box, $75 for a three-quarters box and $100 for a whole box, which contains 46 packages of jelly beans.
Michelle Quillin, PTO treasurer, said schools are really having to be creative with fundraising these days since budgets are so tight for the students' “wants” and even some of the “needs.”
“We are hoping to raise $5,000 in order to purchase new uniforms for every sports team, this year. By sponsoring a box for only $100, a business or individual will receive a letter of appreciation with the tax ID number from our organization, for tax write-off purposes, and the pride of knowing they are showing thanks to our hard-working, well-deserved military personnel. A half-box option is $50 and will also receive the tax ID and letter.
“Because so many of our local Marines came out this summer to assist in the build-out of our new courtyard, we wanted to give back by donating candy to the troops. It also shows the student body that even their local fundraising efforts can have an effect far and wide,” said Quillin.
“It's a win-win situation for all involved. Students get their uniforms, sponsors get tax deductions, and our military gets a sweet delivery.”
