Mom charged for meth in 2-year-old

Yuma County prosecutors have charged a Foothills woman who was arrested earlier this week after methamphetamine was reportedly found in the system of her 2-year-old son.

A criminal complaint filed against Trina Rae Carroll on Friday in Yuma Justice Court, charging her with child abuse and endangerment with two priors, both of which are felonies.

Carroll, 34, was arraigned before Yuma Justice of the Peace David Cooper, who ordered her bond remain at $11,105, which he set at a previous hearing.

Prosecutors had asked for the bond amount to be raised. But Cooper decided to leave it the same since there was no prosecutor present at the hearing to give any reasons for an increase.

Carroll, who lives in the 12600 block of East 46th Drive, was arrested Tuesday by Yuma County sheriff's deputies on suspicion of endangerment, child abuse and involving a minor in drug abuse, all felonies.

In court records, Carroll admitted to using methamphetamine at a motel on 5th Avenue on Thursday, April 24, and taking her child back there the following day.

She also admitted to using opiates during that time, according to court records.

Carroll took the toddler to Yuma Regional Medical Center on Friday afternoon, April 25, after he began crying uncontrollably and complaining of stomach pain, court records indicated.

After finding methamphetamine in the child's system, the hospital contacted Yuma police, who referred the case to the sheriff's office Tuesday. The sheriff's office began an investigation that same day, which led to Carroll's arrest.

The toddler was treated at the hospital and is the temporary custody of his maternal grandmother, according to the sheriff's office.

Carroll remains in custody at the Yuma County jail.

In addition to appointing a public defender to represent her, the judge scheduled her next court date, a preliminary hearing for next Friday at 4:45 p.m.
