Avenue A stretch to close overnight during week

    Comments 0 | Recommend 0

In the weeks ahead, Avenue A will be closed between 16th and 24th streets on some weekdays between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m. to allow paving work to be done as part of the street widening project, city officials say.

As work progresses, paving in the intersections with 16th Street and 24th streets will require weekend closures of Avenue A.

No definite times for the closures have been set, and the city is urging motorists to use 4th Avenue or Avenue B to travel north or south.

On Avenue A during daytime hours, the right northbound lane is closed and the center turn lane is used for northbound traffic, so motorists should expect delays behind those waiting to make turns.

As pavement has been removed on the east side of the avenue, turns onto and off of side streets will be bumpy and trailing motorists should give the drivers in front of them extra time to complete these turns, city officials say.

The overall project involves the widening of Avenue A to double the current number of through-traffic lanes as well as intersection improvements at 16th and 24th and a water main improvement just south of 24th. The rough estimate for completion is by Thanksgiving week.

At present, travel on 16th is reduced to one lane in each direction at A during the daytime hours. The city urges motorists who cannot avoid this intersection to leave several minutes earlier than normal to compensate for delays.

The Avenue A project is one of various. traffic projects in the city, among which are intersection improvements at 24th Street and 22nd Drive.

A newly installed traffic signal at 22nd and 24th is expected to be activated this month, city of Yuma officials said.

The signal could be turned to flashing yellow by FridayJuly 10, and full activation could occur as soon as July 14, city officials said.

Traffic patterns at the intersection will not flow the same as at other city traffic signals, the city said. The three phases of traffic flow at this intersection will be as follows:

    • Westbound 24th Street through traffic and left turns from westbound 24th Street onto southbound 22nd Drive.

    • Westbound and eastbound through traffic on 24th Street.

    • Eastbound 24th Street through vehicles and eastbound left turns onto northbound 22nd Drive.

The overall project at the intersection includes roadway improvements, including a new curb, gutter and sidewalk, plus median modifications at 21st Drive, Camino Barranca and the Albertsons grocery store driveway. Traffic control will be in place between Camino Alameda and Avenue B, and left turns from 24th Street onto 21st Drive may be restricted at times.

Other ongoing road and traffic construction projects in the city are:

    16th Street pre-widening

As gas pipeline work continues on the south side of 16th Street between I-8 and Arizona Avenue, motorists are urged to be prepared for temporary delays.

The work is being done in advance of the planned widening by the Arizona Department of Transportation of 16th Street. Construction is expected to begin this summer.

    Carver Park neighborhood

Magnolia Avenue will be closed or reduced to one lane at times between 5th and 8th streets as part of this project. Motorists should use Avenue A or Avenue B for north-south travel between 1st and 8th streets, the city says.

The Carver Park neighborhood street replacement and reconstruction project is bounded by the West Main Canal on the north, Avenue A on the east, 8th Street on the south and Magnolia Avenue along the west. Construction is expected to be completed by midsummer. Current work includes closure of 17th Avenue north of 3rd Street.

    32nd Street water line
    relocation, Pacific Ave.
    to Avenue 2-1/2E

The right westbound through traffic lane of 32nd Street has been closed between Pacific Avenue and Avenue 2-1/2E due to the expansion and relocation of an existing water line along 32nd Street. Additional work is expected in the northwest corner of Pacific Avenue and 32nd Street.

The existing pipeline is located in area where ADOT will put in new storm retention basins. Most of the work is off of the street, the city said, and the project is expected to be complete by August.
