City's water billing system being altered
Some changes are coming to the city of Yuma's water billing system as a result of an overhaul in the utility billing software that, among other things, could bring monthly billing sometime in the future.
More immediately, though, current city services bills are alerting customers to changes in their account numbers in mid-May.
City water, sewer and residential solid waste customers will be asked to be sure their account numbers on their bills from May thereafter match the account numbers on file with any automated payment service they use.
The city's online and automated phone payment system will go offline at 5 p.m. May 7 and remain off until approximately 10 a.m. May 14, when the city activates its new utility billing software.
Customers particularly need to pay close attention if their bills come due on or before May 7-13.
Those with bills due may mail their payment to the address listed on their bill: City of Yuma, P.O. Box 78324, Phoenix, AZ 85062-8324.
Or customers may bring payment to City Hall, One City Plaza (3rd Street between 1st Avenue and Madison Avenue). Hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. every other Friday. A drop-off box is located near the main entrance to City Hall for those bringing exact payment in a sealed envelope.
Those electing to bring payment to City Hall should be aware that on May 10, during this scheduled software downtime, City Hall will be closed due to its rotating Friday schedule.
The prior service was based on an outdated operating system that lacked options for continued support. The new system is more like an overhaul than an upgrade, hence the weeklong downtime.
“We recognize this changeover may cause a slight inconvenience for our customers, but we want to assure those affected by this change that we will work with them should their bills come due during this scheduled downtime,” said Pat Wicks, director of Financial Services. “We will not aggressively disconnect services during the changeover period, although those with past-due accounts are encouraged to get in touch with us as soon as possible to discuss payment-arrangement options.”
Those wanting to work out a payment arrangement may go to City Hall or call 373-5076.
Additional changes in utility billing are likely to come in the future once the software is installed and functioning properly, Wicks said. Among those could be monthly billing instead of the current every-other-month billing cycles.
