Citizenship class offered in Yuma

An eight-week class will be offered in Yuma starting Sept. 10 for area residents who want help preparing for their U.S. citizenship exams.

The class will take place on Mondays from 6 to 8 p.m. at Valley Baptist Church, 3830 W. 8th St., through Oct. 29.

Emilia Carrillo, a longtime citizenship instructor in Yuma, conducts the classes in English, to ensure students improve their fluency even as they study U.S. government, history and the Constitution.

The class is free, but a fee in a still-undetermined amount will be charged for classroom materials.

Residents who want to take the class to prepare themselves for the citizenship class administered by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service should show up on the first day. They can also get more details by calling Carrillo at 782-1345 or 373-3950.

Carrillo previously taught the class through the Crane Elementary School District. When budget cuts forced the district to end the class in 2010, Carrillo began teaching it on her own.
