San Pasqual breaks ground for new classrooms

It's out with the old, and in with the new Wednesday at San Pasqual Valley Unified School District, as officials broke ground on new classrooms.

The district received a grant for $8 million to replace and add classrooms to the elementary and high schools.

Superintendent David Schoneman said the groundbreaking ceremony was a really nice way to start off the school year.

The district plans to take down 10 old classrooms and add 10 new classrooms to the elementary school, while taking down five classrooms and adding five new classrooms at the high school. New restrooms will also be added to both facilities.

Schoneman explained that they are currently in the process of wrapping up the bids on the property in addition to waiting for the state to release funds so they can begin construction in October.

Speakers at the ceremony included San Pasqual Valley Unified School District school board vice president Monica Montague and board member Ramon Barton along with Keeny Escalanti, vice president of the Quechan Tribal Council.

The two companies working on the project are Nielsen Construction of California and HMC Architects who joined in the festivities to show photos of their construction plans.
