'Fight Clean' sets two trash pickup days
Looking for something to do this summer? Help keep the border trash-free.
The International Alliance for No Contamie/Don't Trash La Frontera has set it's first two trash pick up dates in a campaign to help keep the border clean.
The first clean-up day is from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday at 385 Adobe St. in San Luis. The second clean-up day is Tuesday, July 28 from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. at 1335 Sunset Drive in Somerton.
The yearlong campaign, which runs through March 2010, is designed to help educate a total of 10,000 students from both sides of the border on how to "Lucha Limpio" or "Fight Clean." The alliance, made up of representatives from Yuma County, and San Luis Rio Colorado, Son., has met several times since September to plan and promote the clean ups as well create the educational plans.
The Regional Center for Border Health Inc. was awarded $50,000 in funding from the Environmental Protection Agency to help fund the project, said MariaJose Almazan, with the Regional Center for Border Health. In addition, she said the Regional Center for Border Health contributed $30,000 to help fund the project.
Total, the alliance will host six trash cleanups, with three on each side of the border. They will also advertise and provide promotional materials encouraging students and residents to help keep the border clean.
The campaign will include TV and radio commercials in both English and Spanish to help keep the community informed.
