Opera tenor's Christmas concert to benefit mission

Music always feeds the soul. On Sunday, beautiful singing promises to also feed hungry families.

Opera singer Ruben Dominguez will present a Christmas concert called “Singing For Their Supper.” The special musical event benefits Crossroads Mission, a nonprofit organization in Yuma that offers meals and shelter for homeless people, along with recovery programs for people battling drug and alcohol addictions.

The concert is slated for 2 p.m. Sunday at the Historic Yuma Theatre, 254 S. Main St.

Officials with Crossroads Mission say that the public will be given not only a powerful opportunity to help less-fortunate families but will also be treated to a glorious musical experience.

“His voice is fantastic, to say the least!” said Myra Garlit, executive director at Crossroads Mission. “Ruben is known as the ‘gentleman tenor.' He will be singing Christmas songs, as well as other favorites.”

Admission is $20 per couple or $25 for a family up to five people, with additional people admitted for $5 each.

“We're also asking concert-goers to bring in nonperishable food which will be collected at the door,” Garlit said.

Dominguez, who is classically trained in opera, comes to Yuma from Mexicali, Baja Calif.

He was born in Hermosillo, Son., but has spent much of his life in Mexicali, where he has studied at Centro Estatal de las Artes. His first CD, “Asi Soy Yo,” sold more than 3,000 copies. His second CD is titled “Semejanzas.”

“This is a family event. So come and expect to be soothed by Ruben's presentation of vocal art,” Garlit said. “Remember, there will be a special visit by Mr. and Mrs. Claus, so it will be a treat for the whole family.”
