Calexico man in critical condition following I-8 rollover
One man remained in critical condition at a Phoenix hospital on Monday following a vehicle rollover on Interstate 8 west of Yuma over the weekend.
Martin Rodriguez Mora, 67, of Calexico, was one of two people flown to area hospitals following the accident that occurred west of Gordon's Well shortly after 4 p.m. on Saturday, the California Highway Patrol said.
Cristobal Esparza Soto, 56, of Calexico, was flown to Desert Hospital in Palm Springs. His condition was not immediately available Monday.
They and five others were traveling in a Ford Aerostar van in the westbound lanes of I-8 when an axle broke, causing a tire to come off, CHP said. The van went off the road and rolled over.
The van was carrying farm laborers, all from Calexico or Mexicali, CHP said.
Rodriguez Mora was flown to Banner Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix for injuries that included multiple broken ribs, CHP said. He was listed in critical condition by the hospital.
Esparza Soto was taken to the Palm Springs hospital for treatment of injuries that included cuts and abdominal pains, CHP said.
The other passengers suffered minor injuries and were not hospitalized, CHP said.
