According to Yuma Police Department officials, a mentally disturbed individual was inside Sam's Club and was the reason the store needed to be evacuated. Yuma Fire Department medical personnel treated a male in the back of a YPD vehicle at the scene of the crime.

Man arrested in store disturbance appears in court

The man facing charges for reportedly causing a disturbance at a Yuma store appeared before a judge Wednesday.

Isaac Contreras, 29, entered not guilty pleas to misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and criminal nuisance in Yuma Municipal Court. The judge set a trial date for 2 p.m. Jan. 30.

Contreras was arrested Tuesday night and booked into the Yuma County Detention Center on those charges.

The incident began when Contreras entered Sam's Club, 1462 S. Pacific Ave., and allegedly began making disturbing comments to employees about having a handgun. He also was reportedly pacing the store erratically.

Officers with the Yuma Police Department responded to the store at about 8:10 p.m. and found Contreras near the meat counter. The area around the counter was evacuated, and police arrested Contreras. No handgun was found in his possession, and no injuries were reported.

YPD encourages anyone with any information about this case to call 373-4700, or 78-CRIME to remain anonymous.
