Ceremony to mark anniversary of Corrales killing set
A ceremony honoring the memory of Amancio Corrales will be observed with a demonstration of unity and support on May 6, the third anniversary of his murder.
The ceremony will take place at Johnson Mortuary and Desert Lawn Memorial Park, 1415 S. 1st Ave. The event is open to the public and will begin at 6:30 p.m. and end at 7:30.
Corrales, a gay man who was a female impersonator, was murdered the morning of May 6, 2005. His body was found at Paradise Cove.
"It was shortly after the last anniversary celebration that a tip from a courageous citizen led to the arrest of a suspect," according to a news release from the Amancio Project.
Ruben Solorio, 23, of Yuma was arrested and charged last May with one count of second-degree murder in Corrales' death. Solorio remains in the Yuma County jail; no trial date has been set.
In the upcoming ceremony to honor Corrales, Michael Baughman, founder of the Amancio Project, will give up-to-date information on the court proceedings at the ceremony.
Singer and song writer Anne James will perform a song she wrote especially for Corrales called "Amancio." Song lyrics will be available for those who attend the ceremony.
There will also be speakers who will talk about Corrales's life and on the responsibilities that citizens have to speak out against violence.
