Man in custody after Thanksgiving shooting
The suspect arrested in Thursday night's shooting in Yuma that sent another man to the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds will appear in court again Tuesday to learn whether formal charges will be filed against him.
Luis Galindo made his initial appearance in Yuma Justice Court on Friday. He was informed by Justice of the Peace Pro Tem Yolanda Torok that police have asked the county attorney's office to charge him with one count of attempted second-degree murder, two counts of aggravated assault and two counts of misconduct with weapons.
The Yuma County Attorney's Office has 48 hours to review Galindo's case to determine whether to file any charges.
Galindo was arrested moments after a shooting shortly before 10:30 p.m. Thursday at 20th Place and Avenue A.
"Officers were in the area almost immediately after the shooting," said Sgt. Scott Legros of the Yuma Police Department. "Galindo was caught a few houses away just off the alleyway."
Legros said Galindo was still at the scene when officers arrived and was trying to pass himself as someone who was there to see what was happening. But he was positively identified by three witnesses as "the shooter."
"We had him in custody within minutes of the shooting," Legros said.
The victim, who has not been identified, was taken to Yuma Regional Medical Center, where he was treated for non-life-threatening wounds. According to police, the victim had been shot several times with a rifle - twice in the leg and once in the buttocks.
While the investigation is still ongoing, Legros said, the disturbance may have started at a nearby Circle K convenience store between two men and that one of the subjects left and his brother came back and committed the shooting.
Galindo remarked during his hearing Friday that the judge should set his bond at $25 million, but Torok set it at $1.6 million.
The prosecutor had originally asked for $50,000 but later asked that the amount be increased due to the nature of the offense and that the family of the victims live in the area and are fearful of Galindo's release.
