High schools repairing storm damage
Schools in YUHSD are still working to fix damages from the storm that rolled through Yuma on Aug. 26 including the roof of the Practice Gym at Yuma High School, which has 600 square feet of roofing that needs to be replaced.
The gym roof sustained wind damages, which exposed insulation in addition to rain damage to the ceiling and floor underneath.
For the next three weeks, work crews and contractors will be on the YHS campus working to assess, clean and repair areas that had water and wind damage.
According to a news release, all workers will use the proper protective clothing, which will consist of dust protective suits as well as respirators with dust cartridges, in compliance with state and federal standards.
Classes that were being held in the affected areas have been temporarily moved to other locations on campus while repairs are made. A few hallway entrances and classrooms will be tightly sealed off with plastic covering. Students and staff have been notified of these changes.
“We are fortunate to work among so many resourceful and flexible faculty members who find amazing ways to keep students and learning at the forefront regardless of the situation,” said YHS Principal Faith Klostreich in a news release. “We greatly appreciate their positive attitudes and willingness to do ‘whatever it takes!'”
There was also roof damage to buildings on the YHS campus, as well as water damage in seven classrooms. The softball dugouts were also destroyed, along with 300 feet of fencing surrounding the tennis courts.
In addition to these damages at YHS, Kofa High School sustained damages to several classrooms, a metal storage shed and the roof of their baseball dugout.
