Suspect in Winterhaven shooting and stabbing charged

A criminal complaint was filed Friday in Yuma Justice Court against the man suspected of stabbing one woman and shooting two others last weekend in Winterhaven.

Anthony M. Davis, 35, was informed by Somerton Justice of the Peace Jorge Lozano that he was being charged with one felony count of attempted theft of means of transportation and a misdemeanor count of theft.

Lozano, while reading the complaint to Davis, informed him that the felony charge was for trying to steal a Ford SUV and the misdemeanor was for allegedly stealing a wallet and a cellphone.

“I don't give a damn about this,” an aggravated Davis said at one point during the hearing. “This is bull.”

Davis, who was on parole at the time of the incident, was also informed that a warrant of extradition from California had not been filed against him yet, more than likely due to having local charges that needed to be resolved first.

Lozano also ordered that Davis' bail remain at $10,000 and scheduled his next court date, a preliminary hearing for July 13 at 4 p.m.

According to the Imperial County Sheriff's Office, the stabbing and shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. last weekend at a Winterhaven residence on Turquoise Circle. Davis allegedly got involved in an argument with his girlfriend and several other women upon who were there. During the argument, Davis allegedly stabbed his girlfriend and shot two other women with a small-caliber handgun. One of the women was shot in the neck, while the other was shot in the back.

Davis fled the scene before Quechan Police arrived. Authorities from several law enforcement agencies, including the Yuma Sector Border Patrol and Yuma Police, began searching the area for Davis, but were unable to locate him. Davis was thought to have fled to Yuma following the incident.

Davis' girlfriend refused medical treatment on the scene, but the two women who had been shot were transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center for treatment. The woman who was shot in the lower back was released later that night, while the woman who had been shot in the neck remained hospitalized in stable condition. Davis was apprehended by Yuma Police at about 4 p.m. Tuesday at a residence located in the 400 block of South 15th Street.
