Lieberman scheduled to spend time in Yuma County

Presidential candidate Joe Lieberman and his wife will be in Yuma on Sept. 8 to meet area residents and get a look at Yuma County, local Democratic party officials said.

"People should come out to hear him, even if they're not supporting him," said Marci Rios, second vice chairman of the Yuma County Democratic Central Committee.

Lieberman, a U.S. senator from Connecticut, is scheduled to be at Democratic headquarters, 318 S. Main St., from noon until 2 p.m. Sept. 8, Rios said. He said the Democratic presidential candidate and former vice presidential candidate is coming to Yuma with a group of state legislators.

Rios said that although "things change from day to day" the plan as of Tuesday is that Lieberman will stay in Yuma until 4 p.m., visiting with various groups and maybe even having a picnic at one of Yuma's parks.

The Yuma County Democratic Central Committee is meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at the party's local headquarters to discuss preparations for Lieberman's appearance, according to Luis A. Heredia, party secretary.

All Democratic precinct committee persons are urged to attend the meeting, Heredia said. The party hopes to establish a permanent working group to arrange for special visits from presidential candidates.

In addition to discussing Lieberman's visit, Yuma City Council candidates will make last-minute presentations as they gear up for the Sept. 9 primary election, Heredia added.
