Five injured in rollover near Tacna

The Wellton Fire Department was called out Monday to assist the Tacna Fire Department on the scene of a single-vehicle collision involving five injuries.

According to Sgt. David Rodriguez of the Wellton Police Department, the accident happened at about 12:27 p.m. He said the vehicle was traveling westbound on Interstate 8 when it rolled over at approximately milepost 44.2.

“We're not sure yet what caused the accident.”

Rodriguez said two of the patients had to be airlifted from the scene by CareFlight air ambulances and flown to Phoenix-area hospitals. “Because both lanes were shut down, the helicopters were able to land on the freeway.”

The remaining three patients, Rodriguez said, were transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center by Rural/Metro.

Both of Interstate 8's westbound lane were shut down for a little over an hour, causing long lines of traffic to back up in both lanes.

Additional units on scene were the Wellton Police Department, Tri-Valley Ambulance, Arizona Department of Public Safety, the Yuma County Sheriff's Office and the Yuma Sector Border Patrol.
