Disabilities assistance to be presented

When raising a child with disabilities, it is important to know what resources are available to assist in helping that student transition through the various stages of life.

Yuma Union High School District's Special Education Training Series continues with the “Yuma Community Roundtable” session Thursday.

Six local agencies will present the services they provide for adults with disabilities:

• DES/Division of Developmental Disabilities

• Excel Group

• Goodwill Industries

• RSA/Vocational Rehabilitation

• Saguaro Foundation

• SMILE (Services Maximizing Independent Living Empowerment)

The discussion is open to the public and will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Cibola High School's Library Media Center, 4100 W. 20th St.

In the past, Cibola Assistant Principal Lisa Domby explained, a wide variety of people have attended the sessions to glean information for friends or family members. Some general education teachers also attend to learn how they can help students they may encounter during their teaching careers.

She said the training sessions have been offered at Cibola for the past two years in partnership with Arizona Department of Education Parent Information Network specialist Teri Rademacher.

Domby added that the special needs students at CHS will be baking refreshments and providing child care under their parents' supervision. A Spanish translator will also be present.

For more information, call Domby at 502-5710.
