Alleged meth smuggler arrested at border
A Gadsden man was arrested Wednesday allegedly attempting to smuggle 22 pounds of methamphetamine into the United States through the U.S. Port of Entry at San Luis, Ariz.
Customs and Border Protection agents became suspicious of Gilberto Mejia, 20, as he tried to enter the country in a Buick sedan and ordered him into a secondary inspection area for further scrutiny.
A working dog then indicated the possible presence of contraband inside the right rear passenger door. After prying off the door panel, the agents reportedly discovered 22 pounds of meth hidden in the door frame.
The drugs and vehicle were seized. Mejia was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations.
