Annual dunes cleanup is Jan. 15

The 14th annual Sand Dunes Cleanup will be Jan. 15, and the United Desert Gateway invites all “desert enthusiasts” to join in the effort to rid the dunes of trash.
“This is a good, fun family event. It keeps our local dunes clean and open for everyone,” said United Desert Gateway project manager Charla Teeters in a previous article with the Yuma Sun. “We are hoping volunteers show up, and as in years past scour the desert, picking up all the trash they find.”
“The annual cleanup is an important date on any duner's calendar and is vital to the sustainability of the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area,” stated a news release.
To register, duners need to arrive at the designated registration sites at 8 a.m. PST to pick up their trash bags. The first 3,000 registered volunteers will receive a free T-shirt, and all bags of trash turned in will be exchanged for tickets to enter into the prize drawing held at the end of the event.
South dunes registration areas include Gordon's Well (at the south end main staging area, near the public restrooms), Buttercup at Vendors Row, Ogilby Camp (past the tower toward the south) and Midway. The northern registration area includes Glamis Flats (north end main staging area, event area of the Glamis Beach Store, near vendor row), Wash Road (Wash 4), Gecko Road (across from the BLM ranger station) and Oldsmobile Hill.
The dunes cleanup will last until 11:30 a.m. and will immediately be followed by lunch, which will be served until 12:30 p.m.
