AWC builds up engineering program

Arizona Western College is working hard to improve the likelihood of engineering students getting hired locally.

AWC and University of Arizona are pleased to announce a partnership aimed to smooth the path to a bachelor of science in systems engineering that will be available starting in the fall of 2010, says Rakesh Pangasa, AWC professor of mathematics and and engineering.

The AWC engineering advisory committee conferred with local business representatives about the needs of the industry and requirements of would-be employees. Additionally, the committe examined curriculum expansion.

"The purpose is to guide and direct the engineering program. We are introducing two new programs. The first is occupational certificates in engineering technology. We also have a bachelor's of science in systems engineering in partnership with University of Arizona."

The latter course will allow students to complete the first three years in Yuma while finishing the final year in Tucson, Pangasa said. The advantage is students may remain at home and save money they would otherwise spend on housing and transportation.

Eventually the plan is to have all four years completed in Yuma, Pangasa added. One goal of  the engineering advisory committee is to devise a plan of action to launch the programs, he said.

That plan of action includes "recruitment of students for the fall of 2010, scheduling of courses, exploring opportunities for student internships and scholarships and the placement of students into employment after graduation."

During the past decade a number of students graduated from the engineering program finding jobs in town at the Yuma Proving Ground, he said. Members of the advisory committee include representatives from YPG, GM's desert test track, Gowan Company, CEMEX, GYEDC, TRAX International Test Services and the city administration. Members will provide their perspective on how best to proceed with the program, Pangasa noted.

And he added, AWC continues to offer an associate of science in engineering degree that can secure students employment as technology assistants or test engineers. The program currently is already serving 50 students, he said.

"We are really excited about these new programs. It's a dream come true because now students can remain in Yuma while completing an engineering degree. And also, there is a critical need of engineers to fulfill the needs of local employers."
